Calgary Technologies Inc. rebrands to Platform Calgary

On March 4, 2019 Calgary Technologies Inc. will begin rebranding to Platform Calgary. As Platform Calgary, our focus will remain on supporting Calgary's innovation-driven companies by providing access to space, programming and advocacy, while also championing the vision for the new Platform Innovation Centre's design, activity, and culture. Our name change comes at the heels of our recent announcement as the new operator of the Platform Innovation Centre opening in East Village in the fall of 2020.

Why Platform Calgary?

There is a need to make innovation more accessible and visible to our community and this rebrand aligns with the City of Calgary's 10-Year Economic Strategy. Platform started with the idea of transforming Calgary into a global innovation hub. As Platform Calgary, we are turning that idea into action. Through this work the next wave of shared prosperity is being generated in our city, transforming local businesses into international success stories. By working together, we can make Calgary a global hub for startups and innovation.

It is about elevating innovation, and Platform Calgary is the next phase and evolution of Calgary Technologies Inc.

What's next?

March 4, 2019 marks our first official day of business as Platform Calgary. Over the next few months, you will see our materials transitioning over to our new name and brand. Our long-term priority is to put a focus on innovation in the heart of downtown Calgary. On March 4, 2019, we are opening Platform Beta at the Hillier Block in East Village. This historic 5,300-sq-ft building will serve as our interim downtown facility while the Platform Innovation Centre is being built.

We will continue to operate and provide services out of the Alastair Ross Technology Centre and The Inc.

Save the date for May 15, 2019: Annual Report to Community, Demo Day and Strategy Launch in the new Central Library. The event will showcase our Junction program graduates and will be the public launch event for our new Platform Calgary identity and strategic plan.

You want to grow your business or social enterprise and we want to help you become a better entrepreneur! Junction is your opportunity to build a strong foundation as an entrepreneur. Learn what it takes to make it, and gain an unfair advantage when approaching investors, partners and customers. What you learn here will better prepare you for your entrepreneurial journey.

Junction takes a founder friendly approach to everything we do. Every aspect of the program is vetted by one question, “is it founder friendly?” This ensures we always deliver content and help based on your best interests, not ours. Secondly, the program is free and does not take any equity. We feel our program will prepare you to take full advantage of seed accelerators after graduation so you can hit the ground running.

Sounds good eh? Don’t jump to the application just yet though! Understand what is expected of you through this program before applying. The program is intense. You will have to work hard to keep up. So it may not be the program for you. Over 9 weeks, about 1/3 of each week is in-class instruction and hands-on workshops led by some really smart people and business leaders. If you are unable to meet program expectations, you may be asked to leave and reapply when you are more ready.

This program is for entrepreneurs who:

  • Are first-time tech founders
  • Are a first time founder with an innovation driven product and/or solution prototype
  • Are serious about learning how to move your company to the next level
  • Do you have an MVP? A BMC? A VPC?
  • Are you pre-seed? Pre-revenue (or early revenue)?
  • Are you willing to work onsite in our new interim downtown facility, The Hillier Block, in Calgary alongside other startups for 9 weeks?

Program outcomes:

  • Find your product/market fit
  • Better prepared for next level accelerators
  • Data room set up
  • Access to advisor network
  • Growth of your network
  • Pitch development
  • Heads up on the unknown

What is a Data Room and why do I need one?
A Data Room is an organized compilation of all your startup documents in one secure location. Think of your company as a giant puzzle. The pieces are the components that make up your business, and Junction will show you how to put them together.

    - It's used to tell the story of your business to customers, future employees, investors...anyone!
    - Can include: Business Summary, Financials, Contracts, Operations, Company Structure, Technology, Legal, etc.
    - Provides you with a toolbox to speak about your startup and gives you an unfair advantage to answer anyone's questions
    - Shows that you are organized

What is the time commitment for the program?
This program is intense! You can expect an average of 15 hours/week spent on in-class sessions and workshops plus deliverables. You will have to work hard to keep up, so it may not be the program for you. If you are unable to meet program expectations, you may be asked to leave and reapply when you are more ready. You can download a sample schedule here to give you a better idea of just how intense this program is:

    Sample Schedule

How does the application process work?
All startups must apply for the program. Companies that meet the the criteria and are applying for reasons that this program can directly help them with, will be shortlisted and interviewed. Startups that are a fit, able to commit to the workload/schedule, and willing to be coached through the program will be accepted. While you have been accepted, there is no guarantee that you will graduate.

Don’t fret, there are plenty of great programs in our ecosystem. If do apply and we don’t feel there’s a fit, we will recommend a suitable path for you to follow, which may include other programs or accelerators.

How can I ensure I'm prepared for the program?
If you have not yet found your product/market fit, spoken with your customer base, or are unsure if your assumptions about your customer are correct, our applied Discover program will walk you through the process and set you up to dive into the meat of the Junction program.

Will this program help me get funding and/or investment?
Not directly. After completing this program, it will put you in a far better position when approaching investors or going after your first seed round but there is no guarantee for investment. We do not actively seek funding for startups.

Does Calgary Technologies take equity in the startups?
No. Junction takes a "founder friendly" approach in everything we do. This ensures we always deliver content and help based on your best interests, not ours.

How much does the program cost?
There are no program fees for Junction.

Can my entire team be in Junction?
If you are accepted, a maximum of TWO people from each startup can participate (i.e. founder and co-founder).

    Is my company too early?
Your startup is a great fit if you have gone beyond the concept stage and have developed or are working on a MVP. Ventures do not yet have to have paying customers or recurring revenue.

Can only Calgary based startups apply?
The program is open to participants around the globe, but startups are expected to be in Calgary for the duration of the program.

Where does the name Junction come from?
There is no perfect guide to navigate entrepreneurship and no two entrepreneurs will take the same path. Some are brand new and trying to navigate their way, while others are well-experienced travellers. Junction is where companies join together to learn from one another, grow together, and leave better than how they started. It is the intersection of Founders and Foundations.
