Calgary Technologies Inc. rebrands to Platform Calgary

On March 4, 2019 Calgary Technologies Inc. will begin rebranding to Platform Calgary. As Platform Calgary, our focus will remain on supporting Calgary's innovation-driven companies by providing access to space, programming and advocacy, while also championing the vision for the new Platform Innovation Centre's design, activity, and culture. Our name change comes at the heels of our recent announcement as the new operator of the Platform Innovation Centre opening in East Village in the fall of 2020.

Why Platform Calgary?

There is a need to make innovation more accessible and visible to our community and this rebrand aligns with the City of Calgary's 10-Year Economic Strategy. Platform started with the idea of transforming Calgary into a global innovation hub. As Platform Calgary, we are turning that idea into action. Through this work the next wave of shared prosperity is being generated in our city, transforming local businesses into international success stories. By working together, we can make Calgary a global hub for startups and innovation.

It is about elevating innovation, and Platform Calgary is the next phase and evolution of Calgary Technologies Inc.

What's next?

March 4, 2019 marks our first official day of business as Platform Calgary. Over the next few months, you will see our materials transitioning over to our new name and brand. Our long-term priority is to put a focus on innovation in the heart of downtown Calgary. On March 4, 2019, we are opening Platform Beta at the Hillier Block in East Village. This historic 5,300-sq-ft building will serve as our interim downtown facility while the Platform Innovation Centre is being built.

We will continue to operate and provide services out of the Alastair Ross Technology Centre and The Inc.

Save the date for May 15, 2019: Annual Report to Community, Demo Day and Strategy Launch in the new Central Library. The event will showcase our Junction program graduates and will be the public launch event for our new Platform Calgary identity and strategic plan.

June Business in Calgary featuring nFluids

Cutting-edge Fluid Additives
for the Oil and Gas Industry
Drilling fluid is an important part
of an oil and gas drilling operation
– its many uses include
cooling the drill bit, removing cuttings,
lubricating the well bore and providing
hydrostatic pressure to balance the pressure
from the reservoir.
The loss of drilling fluid into the
cracks and pores of the surrounding
geology is not only a safety risk but also
very costly with negative environmental
nFluids Inc., a privately held University
of Calgary spinoff company created in collaboration with
Innovate Calgary’s Company Creation program, is developing
a unique product that has the potential to reduce the loss
of fluid while providing a more efficient, environmentally
friendly, cost-effective and safer drilling operation.
“This really is a leading-edge technology for the oil and
gas industry and we’re entering into a brand-new phase of
technology using nanoparticles in oil and gas,” says Jeremy
Krol, vice president, corporate development at nFluids, and
manager, company creation at Innovate Calgary. “nFluids is
harnessing the potential of nanotechnology with the goal to
develop a drilling fluid additive that can help reduce fluid
loss, reduce friction in the horizontal section and provide
increased strength to the well bore.”
nFluids was formed in mid-2012 based on the patented
drilling fluid additive technology being developed by Maen
Husein, a professor in the department of chemical and petroleum
engineering at the University of Calgary’s Schulich
School of Engineering, and Mohammad Zakaria in the labs
of Geir Hareland, former industrial research chair in drilling
“I was working on forming nanoparticles for several different
uses when I was approached by Dr. Geir Hareland
saying that nanoparticles have applications in drilling fluids,”
says Husein. “The application of nanoparticles and
drilling fluids has been tested by other universities and
different research centres however our approach is unique
nFluids Inc. is developing a unique drilling fluid additive that has demonstrated the ability to reduce drilling fluid loss by up to 90 per cent (as
per API test standards) in lab tests. Image courtesy: nFluids Inc.
– we don’t buy nanoparticles off the shelf, we actually form
them in-house. As a result we’ve seen much better properties
compared to what is being reported in the literature.”
nFluids is currently focusing its efforts to reduce the
amount of drilling fluid that seeps into the reservoir formation.
Thus far, the technology has had impressive lab results
that demonstrate the ability to reduce drilling fluid loss by
up to 90 per cent (as per API test standards – high pressure,
high temperature).
Currently, nFluids is in the process of field testing and
has several tests lined up for 2014. Krol says that early tests
have provided a wealth of valuable information and lessons
learned but it is still too early to draw any major conclusions.
However the nFluids team is encouraged by the field
tests and noted that the results might demonstrate additional
benefits that were not part of the original research.
“You may end up going in a slightly different direction
than when you started from but you have to see the benefit,
recognize it, change your process a little bit, and start
focusing on what’s going to be most important,” says Krol.
“That’s the exciting part, what other benefits are we going
to find that we did not already think of?”
