Calgary Technologies Inc. rebrands to Platform Calgary

On March 4, 2019 Calgary Technologies Inc. will begin rebranding to Platform Calgary. As Platform Calgary, our focus will remain on supporting Calgary's innovation-driven companies by providing access to space, programming and advocacy, while also championing the vision for the new Platform Innovation Centre's design, activity, and culture. Our name change comes at the heels of our recent announcement as the new operator of the Platform Innovation Centre opening in East Village in the fall of 2020.

Why Platform Calgary?

There is a need to make innovation more accessible and visible to our community and this rebrand aligns with the City of Calgary's 10-Year Economic Strategy. Platform started with the idea of transforming Calgary into a global innovation hub. As Platform Calgary, we are turning that idea into action. Through this work the next wave of shared prosperity is being generated in our city, transforming local businesses into international success stories. By working together, we can make Calgary a global hub for startups and innovation.

It is about elevating innovation, and Platform Calgary is the next phase and evolution of Calgary Technologies Inc.

What's next?

March 4, 2019 marks our first official day of business as Platform Calgary. Over the next few months, you will see our materials transitioning over to our new name and brand. Our long-term priority is to put a focus on innovation in the heart of downtown Calgary. On March 4, 2019, we are opening Platform Beta at the Hillier Block in East Village. This historic 5,300-sq-ft building will serve as our interim downtown facility while the Platform Innovation Centre is being built.

We will continue to operate and provide services out of the Alastair Ross Technology Centre and The Inc.

Save the date for May 15, 2019: Annual Report to Community, Demo Day and Strategy Launch in the new Central Library. The event will showcase our Junction program graduates and will be the public launch event for our new Platform Calgary identity and strategic plan.

Approaching Coworking
Space Differently
BY ANDREA MENDIZABAL
A
new concept in coworking gives Calgary entrepreneurs,
innovators and startups the opportunity to grow their
businesses and ideas like never before.
The Inc., one of Calgary’s newest coworking spaces,
developed a model that combines a coworking environment
with access to business advisers and mentors who support
those working to accelerate their venture’s success.
“The Inc., powered by the Innovate Calgary team, is more
than just a place to work,” says Steven McIlvenna, director of
entrepreneur development at Innovate Calgary – a leading
technology transfer and commercialization centre that works
closely with startups, entrepreneurs, researchers and investors
taking innovation and ideas to the next stage of growth.
“We’ve built in office hours so entrepreneurs can access
coaches and mentors,” says McIlvenna. “Entrepreneurs can
also access other critical ingredients needed to start and
grow their business such as a peer network of entrepreneurs,
cloud-computing resources courtesy of Cybera and
Microsoft, access to core programming, and a free law clinic
courtesy of the University of Calgary’s faculty of law.”
It takes an entire community of support resources to drive
the success of an innovation, business idea or discovery.
The Inc. was built for entrepreneurs and startups seeking
to leverage that ecosystem, and who want to be part of a
collaborative and vibrant entrepreneurial community.
“Having access to mentors within the space has been great for
learning about my venture,” says entrepreneur Aram Razouki,
founder and CEO, Winsome Innovations. “I also wanted to
keep working within the University of Calgary community I
had grown in, and The Inc. has allowed me to do just that.”
Razouki learned about The Inc. while completing a student
capstone project through the University of Calgary’s Hunter
Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. He is currently
working to commercialize a home dry-cleaning technology
for garments.
The DRESSFRESH is an easy-care system that allows you to
quickly clean lightly worn clothing in minutes – reducing the
need to dry-clean or launder pieces of clothing that may not
necessarily be dirty.
The Inc., located within 2,000 square feet of the Alastair Ross
Technology Centre in the University Research Park, is a bright,
open-concept office accessible 24-7 and features drop-in desks,
Cybera’s ultra-high speed Wi-Fi, dedicated meeting rooms
and touchdown points, office amenities such as a copier and
storage, and phone booths for quick private calls.
“The Inc. helps you maintain the appearance of a larger
company, even when you’re only a small team,” says Razouki.
“This allows you to meet clients in the office which makes a
better impression.”
There is a wide fit for members, ranging from pre- to earlyrevenue
startups. It is ideal for those who are ready to grow
and move their business or idea out of the basement, coffee
shop or home office. It is more than a place to set up shop and
access a professional business address and office amenities.
“We are working directly with you to help you get further
faster. The goal is to foster and support a startup learning
environment,” says McIlvenna. “We believe that entrepreneurs
working in a community of other entrepreneurs can learn
more, grow faster and build better business.”
