The results are in and the winners of the 2011/12 Student Technology Innovation Challenge (STIC) are:
First Place: Orpyx Medical Technologies Inc.
Orpyx Medical Technologies Inc. develops high-tech, low-power, user-friendly sensor-based technologies and sensory substitution systems in order to provide quality solutions to better cope with disease, enhance athletic performance and improve quality of life.
First Runner Up: Spine Rx
Spine Rx offers a novel solution for spinal disc repair in patients with degenerative disc disease. The Spine Rx device will restore function to the disc and provide mechanical stability while enabling the disc to regenerate the damaged tissue. The overall result will be a long term regenerative solution.
Second Runner Up: ENERCAL Data Systems
ENERCAL Data Systems provides software solutions for energy producers and service companies, providing effective streamlining of flow meter calibration procedures.
STIC, an initiative of Innovate Calgary, TEC Edmonton and Alberta Innovates Technology Futures, is an opportunity for Calgary post-secondary students to learn the skills of technology entrepreneurship and apply those skills through a technology business plan competition.
The top three STIC finalists will go on to compete in the province-wide TEC VenturePrize in the Alberta Student Business Plan category for a chance to win additional cash and in-kind prizes worth up to an additional $10,000.
The TEC VenturePrize grand prize winner will be announced at an awards ceremony in April.
