Junction | Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Data Room and why do I need one?

A Data Room is an organized compilation of all your startup documents in one secure location. Think of your company as a giant puzzle. The pieces are the components that make up your business, and Junction will show you how to put them together.

  • It's used to tell the story of your business to customers, future employees, investors...anyone!
  • Can include: Business Summary, Financials, Contracts, Operations, Company Structure, Technology, Legal, etc.
  • Provides you with a toolbox to speak about your startup and gives you an unfair advantage to answer anyone's questions
  • Shows that you are organized

What is the time commitment for the program?

This program is intense! You can expect an average of 15 hours/week spent on in-class sessions and workshops plus deliverables. You will have to work hard to keep up, so it may not be the program for you. If you are unable to meet program expectations, you may be asked to leave and reapply when you are more ready. Refer to the most recent schedule to give you a better idea of just how intense this program is.

Will every company graduate?

Our goal is to help every startup succeed. However, you may be removed from the program due to lack of attendance, failure to complete deliverables, unwillingness to be coached or contribute to group discussions, or if the program is not serving your startups needs.

How does the application process work?

All startups must apply for the program. Companies that meet the the criteria and are applying for reasons that this program can directly help them with, will be shortlisted and interviewed. Startups that are a fit, able to commit to the workload/schedule, and willing to be coached through the program will be accepted. While you have been accepted, there is no guarantee that you will graduate.

Don’t fret, there are plenty of great programs in our ecosystem. If you apply and we don’t feel there’s a fit, we will recommend a suitable path for you to follow, which may include other programs or accelerators.

How can I ensure I'm prepared for the program?

If you have not yet found your product/market fit, spoken with your customer base, or are unsure if your assumptions about your customer are correct, our applied Discover program will walk you through the process and set you up to dive into the meat of the Junction program.

Will this program help me get funding and/or investment?

Not directly. After completing this program, it will put you in a far better position when approaching investors or going after your first seed round but there is no guarantee for investment. We do not actively seek funding for startups.

Does Platform Calgary take equity in the startups?

No. Junction takes a "founder friendly" approach in everything we do. This ensures we always deliver content and help based on your best interests, not ours.

How much does the program cost?

There are no program fees for Junction at this time.

Can my entire team be in Junction?

If you are accepted, a maximum of TWO people from each startup can participate (i.e. founder and co-founder).

Is my company too early?

Your startup is a great fit if you have gone beyond the concept stage and have developed or are working on a MVP. Ventures do not yet have to have paying customers or recurring revenue.

Can only Calgary based startups apply?

The program is open to participants around the globe, but startups are expected to be in Calgary for the duration of the program.

Where does the name Junction come from?

There is no perfect guide to navigate entrepreneurship and no two entrepreneurs will take the same path. Some are brand new and trying to navigate their way, while others are well-experienced travellers. Junction is where companies join together to learn from one another, grow together, and leave better than how they started. It is the intersection of Founders and Foundations.
