What is this program about?

Startup 101 provides a practical introduction to how tech startups operate and how individuals can begin navigating the startup ecosystem with clarity and confidence.

Designed for those at the earliest stage of exploration, this program supports aspiring founders, entrepreneurially curious individuals, and future startup talent who are looking to better understand how startups are formed, validated, and supported. Startup 101 offers a grounded entry point into the tech startup world without requiring a fully formed idea.

Rather than focusing on building immediately, Startup 101 emphasizes understanding the foundations that successful startups are built on. Participants are introduced to how startups think, communicate, test assumptions, and engage with customers and the ecosystem in the earliest stages.

The goal of this workshop:

The goal of Startup 101 is to build fluency in the startup world.

Participants will become comfortable with startup language, understand how early-stage startups differ from small businesses, and learn how founders approach problems, customer discovery, and validation before building. By the end of the session, participants will have greater clarity on where they fit within the ecosystem and what a logical next step looks like.

Participants will leave better equipped to:

  • Initiate meaningful customer conversations
  • Explore or validate an idea with intention
  • Navigate Calgary’s tech startup ecosystem and available supports
  • Take a confident first step toward building or joining a startup

Startup 101 is not about having all the answers. It is about establishing the right mental models, shared language, and context so participants can move forward with confidence and purpose.

Startup 101 serves as the front door to the tech startup world and the foundation for what comes next.
