Platform Calgary is a non-profit, member based organization. Our mandate is to bring together the resources of Calgary's tech ecosystem to help startups launch and grow at every step of their journey, from ideation through to scale.
More about Platform CalgaryFor global startups with big ambitions, scaling isn't just about growth — it's about access to the right environment: to new markets, talent, support, and opportunity. That’s exactly why XingChao, founder of SpeakX, chose to move his startup to Calgary through Platform Calgary’s Global Startup Visa Program.
When XingChao founded SpeakX, his mission was personal — and global. He had experienced firsthand how hard it was to speak confidently in English, even after years of study. His daughter started learning English at age three, and they still invested heavily in helping her improve. "I hope I can help students and job seekers who are suffering from language problems," he shared.
SpeakX was born to bridge this gap: a tech-powered platform helping non-native speakers, especially IELTS test takers, improve fluency and confidence using AI-driven tools.
But to truly scale, XingChao needed more than just product development — he needed access to a thriving innovation ecosystem. That’s why he turned to Platform Calgary’s Global Startup Visa (GSUV ) Program.
“I thought we really needed to explore new business opportunities abroad,” he said. Encouraged by friends and fellow founders in Canada, he applied. “I think it’s a very good opportunity for entrepreneurs like me in China.”
From the moment XingChao joined the GSUV Program, the support was tangible. He was connected to other founders even before landing. “I didn’t know him before… but I saw another Chinese entrepreneur in the virtual meeting and thought, ‘I’m not alone.’” They now work side by side at the Platform Innovation Centre.
Within a month of arriving, XingChao had hired two Canadian employees and was already adapting SpeakX for the Canadian market. Though Platform Calgary didn’t directly source talent, being plugged into the community made the hiring process easier and more informed.
“Platform Calgary has so many resources for entrepreneurs,” he noted. “There’s a huge gap between the business rules in China and Canada — and Platform Calgary is right there, helping to fill that gap.”
Now based in Calgary, XingChao sees the city not just as a landing point but a launchpad for global growth. He’s actively bridging his Chinese team with local Canadian talent, scaling the business, and expanding SpeakX’s offerings to new English learners — including newcomers and their families.
“My daughter loves school here. She even helps neighbors clean snow for money!” he laughed. “Our whole family feels more relaxed. There’s less pressure. It’s a better environment for both business and life.”
For other entrepreneurs considering a similar path, XingChao has simple advice:
Definitely choose Platform Calgary. Save your time, save your money — and get the support you need to grow.”
